Ponnampet, situated in the district of Kodagu (Coorg), is a picturesque region located amidst the scenic hills and valleys of the Western Ghats. Known for its abundant natural beauty, Ponnampet is characterized by lush orange orchards and sprawling coffee and spice estates, including cardamom and pepper plantations. In the early 20th century, Ponnampet was a small village among many others in South Coorg.
The name "Ponnampet" is derived from Sri Cheppudira M Ponnappa, a local chief who served as the Dewan (chief minister) under the ruler Virarajendra. A statue installed at the town's entrance, near the Sri Basaweswara temple, commemorates Sri Cheppudira M Ponnappa as the founder of Ponnampet in honor of his esteemed father, Dewan Cheppudira M Ponnappa. The presence of a Shaivite temple in the town reflects the religious faith followed by the ruler of the region.
The Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama is located 5 kilometers from Gonikoppa, a nearby town in Kodagu.
