About the Ponnampet branch of Ramakrishna Math
Welcome to Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama, Ponnampet, the branch center of the renowned Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. Nestled in the lap of nature, surrounded by jungles in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka State in South India, our center offers a tranquil retreat for seekers of spiritual growth..
The Beginning
In 1927, with the support of the enthusiastic public of South Kodagu and under the guidance of Swami Nirmalanandaji, the then President of Bangalore Sri Ramakrishna Math, Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama was formally established in Ponnampet. It began with the generous donation of a small piece of land by Sri Acchiyanda Kalamaiah (Late).
Glory of Ponnampet Ashrama
Ponnampet Ashrama, also known as the Ponnampet branch center of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, radiates a sense of serenity amidst lush greenery and towering trees. The monks meditate fervently for the welfare of all, and the pioneering work of Swami Shambavananda in eradicating malaria has added to the glory of this center. Ponnampet Ashrama has attracted renowned saints and spiritual personalities from across India, who have blessed its activities.
Visits by Distinguished Personalities
Over the years, Ponnampet Ashrama has had the privilege of hosting esteemed personalities. Mahatma Gandhi visited in 1934, rescheduling his Mangalore-Malabar itinerary specifically to stay at our Ashrama. Vinoba Bhave also graced us with his presence in the following decade. Saints from Sringeri, Udupi, Swaranavalli, Dharmasthala, and other places have also visited this Ashrama.
Service to the Community
As a result of our efforts to combat malaria, a small hospital was established within the Ashrama premises in 1942. With the financial support from the Coorg Provincial Government, Central Imperial Government, and philanthropic individuals, the hospital was expanded in 1949. It became the renowned 'Sri Ramakrishna Sevashrama (Charitable) Hospital,' a beacon of hope for the people of South Kodagu, particularly those affected by poverty. The maternity wing of the hospital became well-known and served the community effectively.
Universal Temple and Spiritual Retreat
In 2009, we constructed the Universal Temple dedicated to the worship of Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda. This sacred addition enhanced the spiritual ambiance of Ponnampet Ashrama, making it a sought-after destination for devotees in search of spiritual retreat and solace.
Holistic Health Care
Since 2010, our Sevashrama has expanded its services to include Naturopathy and holistic healthcare. Through Vivekananda Arogya Dhama, our dedicated team of doctors, therapists, and staff provides medical services aimed at educating patients about self-care and promoting healthy lifestyle habits. The facility offers comprehensive amenities to support patients' well-being.
Education and Social Welfare
For over a decade, one of our significant endeavors has been supporting underprivileged students in their education, with a focus on imparting values along with knowledge.
We, at Sri Ramakrishna Sharadashrama, Ponnampet, are committed to upholding the principles of Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, and serving humanity with love and compassion.
